about
Valley of Vision is a prayer written by Arthur Bennett for a book of puritan prayers that he collated. I discovered this book while I was at Bible College. One of my lecturers read a prayer from it during a chapel service and I was so deeply touched by it. I bought the book straight away, and the Valley of Vision is the first prayer you open to. It was so beautiful that I just wanted to sing the words. I wrote the song fairly quickly, excluding the end. I loved the prayer so much, I was struggling to get it all into a song, and I didn’t know where to take it. I only wrote the end around a month before we went into the studio to make the EP. And I think it’s my favourite part on the EP.
lyrics
Lord high and holy
Lord meek and lowly
You have bought me to the valley of vision
Where I live in the depths
But see you in the heights
Hemmed in by the mountains of sin
So I behold your glory
Let me learn by paradox
The way down is the way up
That to be low
Is to be high
And that the valley
The Valley’s the place of vision
Lord in the daytime
Stars can be seen from
From the deepest, oh the deepest wells
And the deeper the wells, the brighter your stars shine
Hemmed in by the mountains of sin,
So I behold your glory
Let me learn by paradox
A repenting soul is the victorious soul
To have nothing is to possess all
And that the valley
The valley’s the place of vision
Let me find your light in my darkness
Let me find your life in my death
Let me find your joy in my sorrow
Let me find your grace in my sin
Let me find your riches in my poverty
Let me find your glory
